Some Nigerian Anglicans resident in Indianapolis met in a Fellowship gathering on the evening of Wednesday, July 17, 2002 with the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos West Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev’d Peter Adebiyi and his wife Mrs. Adebiyi, who were on a private visit to the United States in 2002. The bishop gave approval for interested Nigerian Anglicans and other Nigerian Christians to have their own place of worship so as to worship in the mode and form back in Nigeria. The bishop encouraged the Venerable Amos Fagbamiye and his wife Mrs. Abike Fagbamiye to pastor the people.

In consultation with a few people a name for the gathering was adopted, Anglican Chapel of the Resurrection and a contract was negotiated to hire the Sanctuary of the Seventh Day Adventist on Michigan Road for Sunday worship only. On Sunday, November 3, 2002, All Saints Day, the first worship service was held with over thirty worshippers. Four months later, March 2, 2003, the Chapel moved to the Chapel of the NBA Robin Run village on 62nd Street, courtesy of the Rev’d Idowu Adwakun who was staff of the village. The Chapel continued to experience a steady growth and following its increased members, the Chapel moved to a bigger space, the Robin Run Community Hall. The Robin Run management also approved of an additional time and day for the Chapel to be able to hold Bible Study fellowship and other activities. The Chapel moved out of Robin Run to its own building, 5733 N. Michigan Road, on Sunday, February 6, 2005. The Chapel is also duly registered and incorporated. On Sunday June 19, 2005 the CMC by the unanimous decision approved that the Chapel were to be referred to as a Church.

Born out of the tradition of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, the Church’s tradition is rooted in the Book of Common Prayer, believes in the authority of the Scripture as the primary source of the knowledge of God’s truth and existence, and for teaching and reproof. Because we are a fast growing multi-cultural congregation, our liturgy reflects our diversity and inclusiveness. Importantly the Church welcomes and serves all Christians and all people who desire to worship God and seek salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Church is nurtured from inception by the Diocese of Lagos West in Nigeria and it is also member of the newly inaugurated Convocation of the Nigerian Anglican Churches in America.

The logo of our Church includes our design of the Compass Rose surrounded by the name and location of our church, Anglican Church of the Resurrection - Indianapolis. The Compass Rose is the emblem of the Anglican Communion and it was originally designed by the late Canon Edward West of New York. The modern design is that of Giles Bloomfield.

The symbol, set in the nave of Canterbury Cathedral, was dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury at the final Eucharist of the Lambeth Conference in 1988. The Archbishop dedicated a similar symbol in Washington Cathedral in 1990, and one in the original design in New York Cathedral in 1992, demonstrating that its use is becoming increasingly widespread. The centre holds the Cross of St George, reminding Anglicans of their origins.

The Greek inscription The Truth Shall Make You Free (John 8:32) surrounds the cross, and the compass recalls the spread of Anglican Christianity throughout the world.

The mitre at the top emphasises the role of the episcopacy and apostolic order that is at the core of the Churches of the Communion.

The Compass Rose is used widely by the family of Anglican/Episcopal Churches.

It is the logo of the Inter-Anglican Secretariat, and is used as the Communion's identifying symbol.
